Manchester United defenders Luke Shaw and Eric Bailly both hobbled off in their 1-1 draw with Swansea, as yet more injuries hit Jose Mourinho's squad.

Shaw, who was making just his ninth league start of the season on Sunday, limped off at Old Trafford clutching his ankle after just eight minutes.

The England international was replaced by Antonio Valencia and the 21-year-old has been blighted by injuries since moving to United, having suffered several hamstring complaints, a broken leg last season, and a groin injury this campaign.

The severity of the injury has yet to be disclosed but it could not have happened at a worse time for Shaw, with manager Jose Mourinho recently having publicly bemoaned how the full-back was "a long way behind" his United team-mates in terms of focus and ambition.

Centre-back Bailly suffered a similar fate as he picked up an ankle knock himself in a tangle with Swans forward Fernando Llorente.

The Ivory Coast international attempted to run off the injury but could not continue and was replaced by Matteo Darmian.

Speaking after his side's eventual 1-1 draw with Swansea, Mourinho confirmed that he suspected Shaw's injury to be the more serious of the two.

"I don't know at all," Mourinho said of the injuries to MUTV. "Luke [Shaw] has to be a big injury, when you're out after 10 minutes, it has to be a big injury.

"Eric [Bailly], maybe he is injured but, at the same time, maybe it's in relation to him being the guy who's played 800 minutes of football in April. Maybe he has also a relation to that."

Shaw, 21, arrived at Old Trafford from Southampton in the summer of 2014 in a transfer in the region of £30m, but his career in the north west has yet to truly take off.

Bailly signed in the summer from Villarreal for a similar fee of £30m, and despite settling in well at the beginning of the season, has also struggled with injuries during his maiden year in England.

Juan Mata made his return from groin surgery earlier than expected to feature in a squad for the first time in four weeks against Swansea.

He added that he "preferred not to speak" regarding the absence of defenders Chris Smalling and Phil Jones.
