Chris Smalling says Manchester United will prepare to target the Premier League title

Chris Smalling says Manchester United can challenge for next season's Premier League title, following their Europa League triumph against Ajax on Wednesday.

Goals from Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan sealed a 2-0 win on an emotional night in Stockholm, following Monday's terror attack at Manchester Arena.

The victory secured United's second trophy of the season and a place in the Champions League group stages, and Smalling believes his side can now target the league title next term.

When asked if United can challenge for the title, Smalling said: "Yeah, I think it's just that consistency. We're teeing ourselves up for a good pre-season and who knows next year," he said.

"We had to deliver because if we didn't the season was a disappointment. Luckily it's a good one.

The 27-year-old said the events of Monday's terror attack gave greater poignancy to the win, as he stressed the importance of securing Champions League football.

"[We had] an extra determination. I think you can see the fans were obviously very appreciative, both sets of fans, and it's good the game can go ahead," the defender continued.
