The striker has a year left on his deal and United are reportedly prepared to give him a "golden goodbye" of around £10m.

However, it is claimed Rooney can trigger a further 12-month option on his £300,000-a-week salary and is not agitating for a move.

After reports that Jose Mourinho was becoming frustrated by Manchester United's lack of transfer activity, the Manchester Evening News have explained why the club are struggling to complete transfers early.

They say United "are not dormant" and are understood to be working on deals for Alvaro Morata, Nemanja Matic and Ivan Perisic.

Apparently Antonie Griezmann's decision to stay at Atletico Madrid rather than move to Old Trafford has "seriously impacted" United's preparations.
