The French goalkeeper picked up a thigh injury in the warm-up for Saturday's 2-0 win over Leicester City at Old Trafford, and had to be replaced by rookie Paul Rachuba for his league debut.
The runaway league leaders could have something of a goalkeeping crisis on their hands if Barthez does make a swift recovery with number two keeper Raimond Van der Gouw recovering from a knee operation and reserve goalkeeper Nicky Culkin on loan at Bristol City.
That leaves Ferguson with only young American keeper Rachubka as his goalkeeper available for selection.
The Red Devils play Liverpool in a big league clash on March 31 and then entertain Bayern in the first leg of their quarter final at Old Trafford on April 3.
Ferguson would want to have the former Monaco ace in his side for both games, but he did admit he might need to sign another goalkeeper if Barthez fails to recover in time.
"It will be a race to get Fabien fit for the Liverpool and Bayern games," Ferguson said on the club's official website. "We might have to sign someone on loan."
