The Argentine ace has been linked with a move to Real for some months now and the Spanish champions were reportedly close to sealing a deal to bring the right sided wing back to the Santiago Bernabeu.
The 27-year-old ace has been unsettled at Inter and was placed on the transfer list as speculation grew over his future at the neroazzurii.
Real were very keen to sign the highly-rated defender and they had offered Spanish international full back Michel Salgado in a swap deal for Zanetti.
The Spanish giants were willing to pay £10 million for the Argentinian international, but the proposed move has collapsed over the player's excessive wage demands believed to be £2.5 million a year.
The former Banfield and Talleres ace, who has spent the last six seasons at Inter, admitted he was pleased about Real's interest but that he was more than happy to stay at the Giuseppe Meazza.
"What do I want? To remain at Inter as long as possible," said Zanetti.
"I want to thank Real Madrid for their interest in me.
"I am not disappointed that I won't be arriving in Spain even though Real is one of the greatest clubs in the world because I feel fine at Milan."
Manchester United have also been linked with a move for Zanetti, but new Inter coach Hector Cuper was very keen to keep his fellow countryman and his decision to stay will be a major boost for the forthcoming season
