The winger has been utilised mainly as a substitute for resurgent United this season, but will now have to delay any plans of battling for a place in the side.
Chadwick signed a new four-year deal in October to end rumours that he would seek a way out of Old Trafford to win first team football.
However, an enforced absence will hit the youth hard, as he looks to cement a place in the England squad for the European Under-21 championships in the summer.
Meanwhile, the English tabloids are reporting that The Red Devils will try to lure Steve McClaren back to Old Trafford following news that Sir Alex Ferguson will remain as manager after the summer.
McClaren rose to prominence under Ferguson before moving on to manager Middlesbrough, but parted on good terms and is a close friend of his fellow Scot.
The former Derby man has a long term deal with Boro, and it seems unlikely that he would return to be an assistant.
