Ferguson may look for new keeper

MANCHESTER UNITED manager Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted that The Red Devils may be forced to invest in a new goalkeeper if Fabien Barthez's hip injury proves to be worse that first feared.

Barthez is missing from United's first European jaunt of the season as Ferguson's side travel to Hungary to play Zalaegerszegi in a Champions League qualifier.

The French shot-stopper is sidelined with the hip problem, which hands a chance of an extended run in the first team to his Northern Irish understudy Roy Carroll.

The former Wigan Athletic man has already shown that he is a more than capable of providing cover, but the exit of Dutchman Raimond van der Gouw in the summer means that next in line is 19-year-old Ben Williams - who will be on the bench on Tuesday evening.

Ferguson admitted that his goalkeeping situation was something he was looking at.

"If Barthez were not to recover, I would have to think about it," confirmed the Scot.

The transfer deadline that Ferguson is working to is August 31 and if Barthez is not fit by this point, then a new goalkeeper could very well be added to the Old Trafford ranks.
