The French keeper was guilty of indulging in a spot of gamesmanship by delaying the spot kick, controversially awarded for a Laurent Blanc block on Steve Marlet, but it worked as he kept out Malbranque's effort.
Fulham had earlier gone in front in the 35th minute when Rufus Brevett crossed to the far post, and Mikael Silvestre failed to clear with Marlet claiming the opener from close range.
Facundo Sava would have had another opportunity to produce one of his masks but for three smart stops from Barthez with his legs, while United, missing top scorer Ruud van Nistelrooy, began to offer more threat when Ryan Giggs moved to a central attacking role alongside Ole Gunnar Solksjaer.
It was the Norwegian hot-shot who restored parity, thumping a tremendous finish past Edwin van der Sar from a tight angle on 62 minutes, after an error by Alain Goma.
Van der Sar pulled off superb saves to deny Solskjaer and Paul Scholes, while Goma could have been punished for a handling inside the box, but a draw was probably a fair result.
