The first Premiership game of 2003 was a watchable affair with Sunderland taking an early lead through a Juan Sebastian Veron own goal after five minutes and a superb Jurgen Macho display denied United time and time again.
An unlikely three points looked on the cards until David Beckham scored on 81 minutes and Scholes headed the winner in the final minute to tame The Black Cats.
It all looked so rosy for Sunderland when a tame attempted lob from Gavin McCann deflected off Roy Keane and Veron headed into his own net with Rio Ferdinand seemingly in place to head clear.
The North East side defended like lions and also had lady luck on their side with Scholes hitting a shot that thundered against the left hand post and then the right before rolling into hands of Macho.
The Austrian denied Solksjaer, Scholes, Veron and Ferdinand leaving the Old Trafford faithful frustrated.
Then nine minutes from time Beckham nipped in after the Sunderland back-line stepped up inexpilcably and the England skipper finally beat Macho.
A winner seemed inevitable and so it proved as Scholes headed in after some invisible defending from the visitors once again.
The Red Devils go second ahead of Chelsea who face Arsenal this afternoon.
