The Royals saw their promotion hopes hit by a 2-0 reverse at Selhurst Park, and Pardew felt his influential winger was simply not at the races.
A combination of a niggling injury and the birth of a child last week were forwarded as the main factors behind the 22-year-old's ineffective display.
"There was a lack of quality," stated Pardew. "But no lack of effort.
"There were a few players off colour, and that happens.
"Luke Chadwick was complaining of a groin injury before the start, and he also had the birth of his young boy this week.
"To be honest, I don't think he looked focused.
"They also had a game-plan to stop him, which restricted us, so I changed it tactically."
