The unassuming full back is out of contract this summer, and Bantams chief Nicky Law is looking to bring him to Valley Parade as Gus Uhlenbeek is calling time on his spell with the First Division club.
The 22-year-old Roche, who impressed during a lengthy loan spell with Wrexham a couple of seasons ago, has represented England at Under-21 level, and made his first team debut for United in the Worthington Cup defeat to Arsenal in 2001.
Although he featured in one of the games of the season, the 5-3 win over Newcastle United at Old Trafford, the defender has been unable to figure prominently in Sir Alex Ferguson's plans and looks set to move on.
"To sign Lee would be great news," confirmed Bradford chairman Gordon Gibb.
"These young lads have been brought up with the right values at a club like Manchester United and, though they may still be young, they are experienced in playing at a higher level and with better players.
"Lee wants to play regular first team football and he sees that he has an opportunity to do that here with us," he told The Yorkshire Post.
"He does not believe that he will have much of a chance to break through into the United first team, and we are in the market for a right-sided defender because Gus has left us."
