The highly-rated centre back has been linked with a host of clubs across Europe with Manchester United, Newcastle, Barcelona, Juventus and Parma all believed to been on securing his services.
The 25-year-old has suggested that he received an offer from a top club which he has found too hard to turn down.
"I don't have any problems to stay at Marseille, but some offers are just too hard to resist," said van Buyten.
"On Tuesday morning, the chances I would stay at Marseille was 70 percent. Now it's already the opposite of that."
The Belgian international revealed he is in talks about a move to mystery club, but that he did not want to reveal too much until all was agreed.
"I am in a phase of negotiations," admitted van Buyten. "In this kind of position, one has all sorts of feelings.
"It is a difficult decision to take and I want to be discreet.
"It is useless to divulge the contact if, at the end, nothing comes of it.
"But if I leave Marseille this will be only for a top club."
Van Buyten has never hidden his desire to play in England, fuelling speculation that he could be on his way to The Premiership.
"Playing in the English championship is something that has grabbed me more than playing elsewhere in Europe," added Van Buyten.
Van Buyten's situation is set to become clear when the player holds a press conference on Thursday with all indications pointing towards a move away from Marseille.
