Silvestre eyes central role

MIKAEL SILVESTRE is hoping to cement a regular slot in the centre of Manchester United's defence this season.

The Frenchman is set to start the new campaign at centre back with Wes Brown sidelined through injury and it is a position that the former Internazionale star likes.

Silvestre was used at left back and centre back last season as United won The Premiership and he is keen to establish himself in one position so as to boost his international chances.

"I knew last season the manager was thinking of me more as a centre-half," Silvestre told MUTV.

"Hopefully I will do as well as I did last season because while switching positions is not a particular problem for me personally, I need to be playing in one if I am going to keep my place in the national team.

"We are short of defenders anyway at the moment, so we all have to be pretty careful."
