The Old Trafford supremo has been handed a new blow with the news that key stopper Mikael Silvestre could miss the opening day game with Bolton after picking up an injury in Wednesday night's friendly defeat at Stoke.
The French star tweaked an ankle and was removed by United as a precautionary measure.
Respected Spanish daily Marca has now claimed that Ferguson has identified Salgado as a possible reinforcement, and is keen to try and push through a transfer.
The former Celta Vigo star will be out of contract at Real next summer, and, despite his assertions that he wants to remain at El Santiago Bernabeu, sources in Spain report that talks over a new deal have stalled.
A United move for Salgado still seems unlikely however, as Ferguson has already stated that he has completed his summer transfer dealings, and will not be delving into the market again.
The Premiership champions have also been linked with Barcelona full back Carles Puyol, but it would be a little surprising if either of the Spanish internationals arrived at Old Trafford before the transfer deadline.
Yet Ferguson has already proved this summer that he is less than truthful when it comes to disclosing information about transfer dealings.
