Sir Alex Ferguson believes John O'Shea has been refreshed by a break.Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes John O'Shea has been refreshed from a break in the side.
O'Shea has not started a Premiership game since the draw with Middlesbrough in October and he has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford.
Ferguson insists the Irishman has a key role to play at Old Trafford and believes the break has done him good.
"When you see the improvement he has made in training, and strength-wise, it is remarkable," said Ferguson.
"For two-and-a-half years we played him all the time in different positions, sometimes with injuries, simply because we had to.
"Rio (Ferdinand) was suspended, Mikael Silvestre was out with an injury, so was Gary Neville and Wes (Brown), and really the boy has done fantastically well.
"Now having given him that break he looks a different player completely. He is fresh and strong and he has been terrific in training."
Ferguson also had words of encouragement for out-of-favour Tim Howard.
The American international lost his place to Roy Carroll earlier this season after a series of blunders, but Ferguson has been impressed by Howard's response.
"That's the name of the game. Life is like that, but Tim's been doing great," added Ferguson.
"His training performances have been very good. It is not a bad thing for him. He will come back better. He will maybe learn more by not playing."
