Brown thrilled with return

Wes Brown was thrilled to pull on an England shirt again.

Manchester United defender Wes Brown was thrilled to pull on an England shirt again on Wednesday night, after fearing his international days were over.

Brown's last England appearance was two years ago in England friendly against Australia at Upton Park, but a string of defensive injuries saw him handed his chance again.

Sven Goran Eriksson played Brown and Jamie Carragher in the heart of his defence against Holland, and they were largely untroubled throughout the dire 90 minutes at Villa Park.

Brown was still happy to have represented The Three Lions again, after so many injury problems in recent seasons - along with the fact he has struggled to get into United's team this term.

"I didn't think I was even close to playing for England again because I was not even playing regularly for Man United, so it is on your mind about whether you will play again," said Brown.

"But I have had another chance now and I'm just glad I took it.

"It was brilliant to be involved again though I know I was a bit fortunate in getting selected only because Matthew Upson was injured.

"I can't even remember the last time I played - it seems that long ago.

"I've had a few bad injuries now and I've just tried to keep focused and keep right mentally.

"You do get very down, but you have all the lads supporting you and as soon as you get back into training, the confidence comes back.

"As long as the gaffer feels I'm up to it, that gives me confidence."
