Carroll fumbled Clarence Seedorf's shot late on in Manchester United's UEFA Champions League clash with Milan at Old Trafford.
Hernan Crespo gobbled up the rebound to give the Italian giants a 1-0 win in the first leg of their round of 16 knockout stage tie.
Sir Alex Ferguson refused to condemn the Northern Ireland international despite the horrendous error, saying that Seedorf should not have been allowed to shoot in the first place.
Ferdinand and Fortune have now moved to back their keeper, by taking their share of the responsibility for the goal.
"As a team, we can take the blame for that," said Ferdinand. "I think we should have closed the ball down a bit quicker."
South African international Fortune also backed Carroll by saying that he should have closed the shot down sooner.
"It's not just Roy Carroll, we're all disappointed," said Fortune.
"We all take the blame.
"In other games, he's saved us. We have confidence in every single player."
