Sir Alex Ferguson has not ruled out moving Alan Smith in to midfield.Sir Alex Ferguson has not ruled out converting Alan Smith in to the driving midfielder he will need to replace Roy Keane.
Ferguson is already looking to a time when his influential skipper will no longer be able to control United's midfield - but is sceptical about his chances of replacing the Irish icon.
One option is to drop combative former Leeds man Smith into a deeper role - despite assertions when the player signed that he would be utilised as a striker.
"It's difficult to say," said Ferguson, when asked if Smith was an option.
"I wouldn't rule him out - he is a good competitor and good tactically. He can play in midfield, out wide or up front and you know he can do it."
Ferguson is well aware of the area that he needs to strengthen in the coming years.
"The part we are trying to address is the midfield," added Ferguson. "We are not going to have Roy Keane for ever.
"It is Roy's sheer presence and the influence he has in always wanting the ball.
"He is pivotal to the way we play."
