John O'Shea is ready to follow Rio Ferdinand's lead and sign a new contract.John O'Shea is ready to follow the lead of Manchester United team-mate Rio Ferdinand by signing a new long-term contract.
The Republic of Ireland international has been discussing an extension with The Red Devils and is near to finalising a four-year deal.
Earlier this week, Ferdinand belatedly pledged his future to United and now O'Shea is aiming to do the same before Saturday's Premiership opener against Everton.
O'Shea has recently stressed he has no intention of leaving Old Trafford and is hoping to quickly resolve the contract issue.
"I am very close to signing a new four-year deal and, fingers crossed, that will be done and dusted before the start of the season," said O'Shea.
"That will take me to around 27 or 28-years-old which people say is around the time you reach your prime.
"Overall, I am looking forward to spending a lot more time at United and enjoying lots more success."
The versatile defender has made 155 appearances for The Red Devils since making his debut in the League Cup against Aston Villa almost six years ago.
He undertook loan spells at Bournemouth and Royal Antwerp before establishing himself as a fixture in Sir Alex Ferguson's first-team squad.
The 24-year-old started at left back in Tuesday's UEFA Champions League qualifier against Debrecen but faces a fight to retain his place once Gabriel Heinze is back to full fitness.
