Paul Scholes has penned a two-year extension to his Man United contract.
Paul Scholes has penned a two-year extension to his Manchester United contract.
The 30-year-old former England international midfielder is now tied to the Old Trafford giants until June 2009.
Scholes, who has amassed over 450 appearances for the club since making his debut back in 1994, has been a key figure for United over the years.
The Salford-born ace famously missed the 1999 UEFA Champions League final through suspension, but has won six Premiership titles and three FA Cup winners' medals during his time at Old Trafford.
"Paul joined us when he was 14 and has given us 16 great years of service. We're delighted to give him a contract up to 34 years of age," explained manager Sir Alex Ferguson to Sky Sports News.
"We hope his next four years is as good as his last four years. He has been a fantastic servant and that loyalty should be repaid. That's what we're trying to do.
"He looks after himself, is a good family man and he's never had any serious injuries. He had the odd knee injury, clean-out jobs, in the past but he's a strong, wee lad and he can overcome all these things."
In a busy week regarding contracts at United, Scholes has been joined by Rio Ferdinand, who has put pen-to-paper on his new Red Devils contract.
Ferguson is now looking to wrap up Cristiano Ronaldo's deal after John O'Shea and Darren Fletcher agreed to extend their stays at the club.
"We are delighted Rio has signed," added Ferguson.
"With John and Darren agreeing their contracts and Cristiano not far away too, we have a team that can stay together for four years now, which is fantastic news.
"There was a lot of rubbish written about Rio demanding £120,000 a week. That was never the case, it was nonsense, all of that.
"It partly started as we're a PLC, but we have to keep things as confidential as we can but the negotiations were not any more aggressive than they were with any other player. It just caught a profile and caught the press' imagination.
"There's always little issues about contracts. We'd been negotiating with Scholes's agent for the last four months. These things are not overnight now, they take time as there are always certain clauses they want in nowadays. They have got lawyers and agents and the agents are very aggressive people today."
