Nigel de Jong has confirmed he will not sign a new deal with Ajax.Nigel de Jong is likely to spark a transfer scramble after confirming he will not sign a new deal with Ajax.
The youngster had been offered fresh terms by the Amsterdam outfit, but he has decided to follow the lead of Steve Pienaar, Hatem Trabelsi and Maxwell and reject the contract.
"My feeling is that I need to take the next step in my career," De Jong told Studio Sport.
De Jong is set to see out the remainder of the season in Amsterdam before taking advantage of his Bosman free transfer status in the summer.
The 21-year-old is comfortable in defence or midfield and his talents have already caught the eye of a number of clubs.
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is an admirer of the Dutchman and could make a move in January, although de Jong says he has yet to speak with any other club.
"I have not had any contact with another club," he stressed. "I want to conclude the last half year of my time at Ajax in a good way."
With de Jong refusing to sign a new deal, Ajax may look to sell him in January in order to secure some sort of transfer fee.
