Wes Brown believes Wayne Rooney will benefit from the departure of Roy Keane.
Wes Brown believes Wayne Rooney and Manchester United will ultimately benefit from the departure of Roy Keane.
Rooney was often deployed in a wide left position to accommodate the Irishman but Keane's move to Celtic has left the way clear for Rooney to operate in his most effective role - playing just off a lone forward.
Brown insists Sir Alex Ferguson can now harness the full potential of Rooney and expects United to go from strength to strength as a result.
"Wayne is playing in his best position now, just off the front man," said Brown.
"He runs at people and I think defenders are finding now that it doesn't matter how you try to play him, he can just shrug you off."
Despite Rooney's prowess Brown believes the rest of his team-mates have to provide a better platform for the England international.
Sir Bobby Charlton's assertion that United's underachievement was attributable to a lack of application from the players has been hinted at by Brown who has now vowed to arrest the club's season-long slump.
"He [Rooney] brings a lot to our team and we hope he can keep on doing that," added Brown.
"He just needs the rest of us, including myself, to do a lot better."
