Roy Keane admits he enquired about taking former Manchester United team-mate Alan Smith to Sunderland.
Smith was given permission by Sir Alex Ferguson to discuss a loan move away from United to boost his match fitness.
He rejected a switch to Cardiff City, while Sunderland's interest was met with a similar response as the striker wants to focus on an intensive training regime at Old Trafford.
"I made a couple of enquiries," revealed Keane. "But Alan has given me his decision.
"He made it clear he's going to stay at United and good luck to him.
"You have to be prepared for the worst when you are looking for players."
Reports persist that Smith could review the situation when the transfer window reopens and may be more amenable to a loan move in the New Year.
Watford have expressed an interest, while fellow Premiership sides are also keen, and there is speculation Bayern Munich are monitoring the situation.
