Sheffield United boss Neil Warnock has expressed an interest in signing Alan Smith.
Sheffield United boss Neil Warnock has expressed an interest in signing Manchester United striker Alan Smith.
A host of clubs have been clamouring to sign Smith after United boss Sir Alex Ferguson admitted he was willing to loan him so that he can gain some valuable first-team action.
Smith has struggled to hold down a regular place in the United side this season after recovering from a serious ankle injury sustained last February.
The England international turned down a possible loan switch to Cardiff earlier this month as he is determined to fight for his place at Old Trafford.
Watford boss Aidy Boothroyd indicated he might move for Smith in the January transfer window and now Warnock has declared his interest in the former Leeds ace.
"Alan is definitely someone I would be interested in having on board," Warnock told the Sheffield Star.
"The lad is a quality player.
"But it would be dependent on certain conditions.
"The first is whether Sir Alex Ferguson wants to send him somewhere, the second is whether he would want to come. And the third is what his fitness levels are like.
"Alan's been out for quite some time and I think he's probably some way off being ready to play on a regular basis.
"In my opinion, that's probably why he doesn't seem to want to put himself in that position quite yet.
"Knowing Alan, he'll want to be right, but the answer is yes - I'd definitely try to bring him here."
