Van der Sar ready for Lille

Edwin van der Sar says Man Utd have all the motivation they need to beat Lille.

Edwin van der Sar has told skysports.com that Manchester United have all the motivation they need to progress in the UEFA Champions League.

Europe's elite club competition resumes in midweek, with United facing Lille in the first leg of a last 16 encounter on Tuesday.

Last season, The Red Devils met the French side in the group phase, but were held 0-0 at home before losing 1-0 away.

Though Van der Sar accepts the Premiership leaders have a better chance of winning the domestic league, he is determined to advance in Europe.

"The possibility of winning the Champions League is a bit smaller than winning the league," Van der Sar told skysports.com.

"We'll do our best.

"We lost against them last year, so it is a good motivation to win this year."

Van der Sar expects Sir Alex Ferguson to have United fully prepared for the game, but the keeper is wary of the threat posed by Lille.

He added: "They are still not a very well-known team, so we have to be careful of that.

"We have to play our game and make sure we get the result we want.

"Sometimes it's better playing Milan or something than another team that is less well-known and you maybe don't know all the players.

"I'm sure the manager and Carlos (Queiroz) are going to prepare to the very best and capabilities to inform the players about tactics and the strong points of the opposite team."

Van der Sar is hoping to be fit for Tuesday's game after missing United's last two matches with a broken nose suffered in the 4-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur.
