Rio Ferdinand believes Manchester United gave it a better shot than last time in Rome after going down again to Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League final at Wembley.
Sir Alex Ferguson's side lost 2-0 to the Catalans in Rome two years ago and could not exact revenge at Wembley.
Pedro put the Spanish champions ahead in the 27th minute before Wayne Rooney slotted home to make it all square at half time.
But Pep Gaurdiola's side asserted after the break and wrapped up the win thanks to goals from Lionel Messi and David Villa.
Ferdinand told Sky Sports 1: "It's hard to say (if it was different from Rome).
"I think we gave it a better shot this time than we did last time even though the scoreline was 3-1.
"We still had a couple of opportunities and got ourselves back in the game at 1-1 and I genuinely believed that we could go on and win the game.
"But it wasn't to be - as I said, you've got to give credit to them, they were the better side on the night."
The England defender believed his side had come out with purpose at the start of the second period.
"Then we got hit by a bit of a sucker-punch - they scored a goal - but I think maybe a couple of their goals were preventable without being too critical on ourselves.
"But, as I said, you've got to give credit where it's due and tonight they deserved to win."
Ferdinand added: "We had a game plan that we thought could beat them tonight but it just wasn't to be."
