Wayne Rooney's own goal gave Stoke an early lead as United once again fell behind this season, and Ferguson was unhappy with his team's slow start.
But Rooney quickly equalised and further goals from Robin van Persie, Danny Welbeck and Rooney secured a comfortable victory.
"It was really slack play at the beginning of the match but once we got going and we got the equaliser we certainly played some great football," Ferguson told Sky Sports.
"We should have had more goals, but we recovered well from losing one early and I have got to be pleased with that."
Ferguson was particularly pleased with the way his strikers played and warned there would be more to come as they developed an understanding.
"For Wayne and Danny, getting off the mark for the season will help," he said.
"Wayne will get better with the games and so will Van Persie. Robin didn't have any pre-season games and Wayne was out for a while with his injury, so the more games the better."
