Juan Mata says Manchester United still have a lot of work to do to secure Champions League football for next season.

Mata scored twice on Sunday to help United to a 2-1 win over Liverpool and move five points clear of their rivals in the race for the top four with eight games to go.

But with Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal all still to play in their run-in, Mata has warned his team-mates against complacency.

Post-match reaction from Mata and Michael Carrick

"Beating Liverpool at Anfield, being lucky to score two nice goals and feeling (the fans') gratitude is something I will never forget. But we must be cautious: these are just three points in the race to our goal," Mata wrote on his weekly blog.

Mata has suffered a frustating time since moving to Old Trafford from Chelsea in a £37.1m move just over a year ago, but regards the Anfield win as one of the best of his career.

"This Sunday has been one of the happiest days of my career," he said.

Van Gaal proud of Mata

"When you start playing football as a kid on muddy pitches, for something so simple and wonderful as having fun, you dream about becoming a footballer one day to be in a game like the one in Anfield.

More from Liverpool V Man Utd

"Manchester United and Liverpool have one of the biggest sports rivalries, and this is the biggest game in English football.

"Besides, the game was also important because both teams were close on the table, fighting for a place in the Champions League next season. It has been an unforgettable day for me."
