Cudicini, who battled to secure a first-team spot last season, will now see former Manchester United star Mark Bosnich be allowed to post his own credentials for the number one jersey.
In a bizarre turn of events, Cudicini was caught out when his dog made a sudden movement and as the keeper struggled to maintain control, he fell over and injured his knee.
The 27-year-old underwent surgery last week to remove a piece of his knee cartilage and is expected to be out for three weeks.
Gwyn Williams, Chelsea's assistant manager said: "I don't know whether his dog is a Rottweiler or a Pekinese, but Carlo was out walking it and it must have seen a rabbit or something because it gave him a sharp tug.
"Carlo felt his knee tweak. He thought he was all right but, a bit later, it was still giving him problems. He saw the doctor and the problem showed up on the scan so he has had it sorted out."
Claudio Ranieri has already taken his first-team squad to Italy and is due back to start their friendly fixtures on July 25 against Leyton Orient.
