The Portuguese international, so impressive in Euro 2000, is likely to be unable to complete a move to Spain or Italy before the transfer window closes, leaving The Premiership as his only feasible destination.
The window in his homeland shut earlier this month, ruling out a return to Portugal.
Liverpool have shown interest in the past, but have since snapped up Nicolas Anelka and Milan Baros.
Nuno Gomes and Marco Rossi have asked the Italian authorities to rescind their contracts, due to the non-payment of wages from the club, and there is a risk that La Viola will lose the players on free transfers.
Fiorentina have confirmed the situation, but obviously want to demand fees for their services.
"In these last two years in Florence, I have demonstrated my attachment to this shirt and to this city," stated the 25-year-old.
"Florence appeals to me, it has become my second home and I thought I could always stay here.
"At the end of last season, there were offers of money for accepting the transfer to a French club. I also refused in order to remain in Florence.
"Unfortunately, in these last few months, I have understood that there are various truths. Many promises, many deceits that have disillusioned me, so I have taken an important decision.
"I do not want to tie my name to a bankrupt procedure and, above all, I do not want to tie my future to the decisions of a judicial administrator.
"For this reason, not for others, I have asked for my contract to be rescinded.
"If my decision was based solely on money, I could have made this choice on December 2."
The former Benfica goal-grabber is under contract until 2005, but would be a real bargain for any English side, with the prospect of a temporary move until the end of the season on the cards, in order to prepare him for the World Cup finals.
Chelsea and Arsenal have tentatively been forwarded as interested parties, although Nuno Gomes has previously declared a lack of passion for a move to England because he feels the weather is too cold.
