Zago is out of contract in the summer, and Roma president Franco Sensi has already admitted that it makes no economical sense to cave into the South American's demand for a lucrative two-year deal at the age of 32.
Southampton are believed to be the club most keen on the international defender, although the Italian media has also mentioned Chelsea, Liverpool and Leeds.
Zago has played in Rome since moving to the Giallorossi in 1997 from Corinthians.
The defender has played over 30 times for his country, and also had spells in the Spanish and Japanese leagues, playing for Albacete and Kashiwa Reysol respectively.
