The former Northampton coach has worked as a scout for both Chelsea and Walsall after leaving The Cobblers, and admitted that he travelled to The Memorial Ground to watch Ellington in action.
"I've done a bit of scouting work for Chelsea," Wilson told Rovers' official website.
"I came down here to watch Garry's first game against Darlington as a scout.
"I was actually here to check out Nathan Ellington because everyone knows he has got a lot of ability."
Wilson will now be working with Ellington as number two to Pirates boss Garry Thompson, and will see at first hand the skills that have made Ellington a target for several top clubs after his scoring exploits at Rovers.
