The 27-year-old is struggling to make the breakthrough into Carlo Ancelotti's starting XI with the likes of Clarence Seedorf, Andrea Pirlo, Rui Costa and Rene Gattuso all ahead of him in the pecking order.
Newcastle United and Juventus have both been linked with moves over recent months, but it is Chelsea who have had a sustained interest in the player stretching back to the beginning of this year.
Claudio Ranieri attempted to try and get Ambrosini in the deal that took Sam Dalla Bona to Giuseppe Meazza in the summer, but Milan were not keen as they had not finalised their plans for the coming season.
However, the emergence of Pirlo has seen Ambrosini's chances become limited, although he is still regarded as a very important part of the squad.
é¼14 million (£8 million) is being touted round Italy as the figure Milan would want for Ambrosini and in the current transfer climate that should prove enough to put off any potential suitors - although Chelsea are believed to have asked to be kept informed of the player's situation.
