Blues' Davids bid came too late

JUVENTUS general manager Luciano Moggi has admitted Chelsea could have signed Edgar Davids, if they had moved earlier in the close season.

The Blues are awash with cash following wealthy Roman Abramovich's takeover at Stamford Bridge, and Dutch duo Davids and Barcelona's Patrick Kluivert were swiftly targeted for moves to West London.

Juve have officially declared that their tenacious midfielder is not for sale, after rejecting Chelsea's overtures, but Moggi has confessed that a lucrative deal could have been struck if the Bianconeri had been afforded enough time to bring in a replacement.

"A month ago, we would have sold him to Chelsea," Moggi admitted. "Now there isn't time to re-plan the team."

Chelsea are seeking a midfield replacement for Jody Morris, and Davids is much admired for his hounding abilities at the highest level.

The Blues are still in the hunt for Kluivert, who is involved in a wrangle with Barca after being asked to take a pay cut at Camp Nou.
