The 34-year-old Australian was a target of The Bluebirds last summer, when he was released by Old Firm giants Rangers, but Vidmar decided to sign for Boro instead last September.
Steve McClaren considered him at the end of last season to be surplus to requirements at The Riverside, with North East rivals Sunderland reportedly in talks with the defender in late May.
However, the ambitious Welsh club have now offered the Australian a chance to come to Ninian Park this summer and help them in their ultimate quest of reaching The Premiership.
Cardiff's ambitions have also seen them turn their attentions to another former Premiership player, with ex-Chelsea midfielder Jody Morris seemingly close to a move to The Bluebirds.
According to the player's agent Jonathan Barnett, the 24-year-old has had several meetings with Cardiff owner Sam Hammam, despite interest in Morris from two Premiership clubs.
Premiership sides Blackburn Rovers, Tottenham Hotspur and Portsmouth have all been linked with a move for the troubled star but all indications suggest Morris will be a Cardiff player by the end of the week.
