Chelsea are favourites to sign the Russian midfielder, unless they manage to convince Real Madrid to release top target Claude Makelele, with Roman Abramovich heavily involved in Smertin's future.
The player had seemed to have signed for Torpedo Moscow, another of Abravomich's clubs, after leaving Les Girondins 15 days ago to head for his homeland.
Bordeaux have now dropped plans to welcome him back to Parc Lescure.
"He won't come back," affirmed Charles Camporro. "He will find another club, but it could need some time."
Coach Elie Baup is extremely frustrated with Smertin's departure, and the fact that he has not found a replacement yet.
Furthermore, Camel Meriem could be departing for Lens.
The former Sochaux star is in line for a year-long loan move to Stade Bollaert.
