The Italian star has badly bruised a finger and broken a bone in his right hand.
The club, though, are confident that the injury will not be a long-term issue and that Cudcini may only miss this weekend's clash with Bolton Wanderers.
"The goalkeeper underwent a scan to discover the bad news," said a club statement.
"But there was hope as well as he will be able to resume training as soon as the bruising goes down."
Chelsea have Scotland's Neil Sullivan as number two, while another Italian - Marco Ambrosio - may challenge him for the chance to start against The Trotters on Saturday.
As a precautionary measure, Chelsea have registered Belgian youngster Yves Makabu-Makalambay with the Premier League, in case he may be needed.
