Boro are looking to bolster their midfield options and lined up a bid for the Cameroon star.
However, Chelsea informed the Teessiders that he was not available and would be included in Jose Mourinho's squad.
The player's agent Barry Silkman told skysports.com that he would be staying and McClaren has now confirmed that he did indeed fail with a move for him.
"We made an enquiry about Geremi but there will be nothing happening there," said McClaren.
"Geremi is part of Joe Mourinho's plans and he is staying at Chelsea."
Boro have now turned their attentions to Ray Parlour - another story exclusively revealed last month on skysports.com - and will hope to seal his signature in the next week.
There is also renewed speculation surrounding Juninho after he was included in a second-string Boro squad to face York City on Tuesday evening .
The Brazilian will play at Bootham Crescent with the likes of Chris Riggott, Stewart Downing and Dutch trialist Sergio Hellings - while most of Boro's first team, including Gareth Southgate, Mark Viduka and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, will travel to Rotherham for a friendly.
