McClaren is hoping to tie up two deals before Monday's transfer deadline.
The Boro boss is looking to bring in a midfielder and a defender.
McClaren has now stepped up his interest in Celtic stopper Balde once again.
The Guinea star is out of contract at the end of the season and has already held lengthy talks on Teesside.
Following the original talks - Boro insisted that they would wait until the summer.
However, Boro have now gone back for Balde with the hope of securing a deal by Monday.
"He is a player we admire and we have looked at and interests us, although he is out of contract in the summer, so I think quite a few teams have spoken to him," said McClaren.
"Defensively we are short at the present moment, so that's our priority, and there are two players we have targeted this week.
"How far that's going to go we will know over the next three days. But it's up to a lot of things happening."
McClaren is also looking at midfield and it appears that Geremi and Albert Celades are his main options.
Skysports.com understand Boro have opened talks with Chelsea again with the hope of securing a deal - but Celades remains a realistic proposition.
Rangers' Dragan Mladenovic was also under consideration, but it is not believed McClaren will follow up his initial interest in the Serb.
Meanwhile, Boro youngster Gary Liddle has signed a new one-year deal at the club.
