Cudicini appeal withdrawn

Chelsea have withdrawn their appeal over Carlo Cudicini's weekend red card.

Chelsea keeper Carlo Cudicini will miss this Sunday's Carling Cup final after the club withdrew their appeal against his sending off against Newcastle.

The Blues had hoped the Italian could play his part in this weekend's showpiece event against Liverpool, however he will be suspended for the clash.

Jose Mourinho still has Petr Cech available for the tie, with youngster Lenny Pidgeley now set to feature on the bench for the Stamford Bridge outfit.

Cudicini was given his marching orders late on at St James' Park after felling Shola Ameobi on the edge of his box.

Chelsea lost the game 1-0 and with it went their hopes of the Quadruple and the dismissal of Cudicini rubbed salt into the wounds.

The club had hoped referee Mark Halsey might rescind the red card on video evidence, however he is standing by his decision during the game and this has prompted Chelsea to withdraw their appeal.
