Opta Player of the Month

April saw Frank Lampard miss out on the PFA Player of the Year award.

April saw Frank Lampard miss out on the PFA Player of the Year award to John Terry, but claim Opta's Player of the Month accolade.

Chelsea's midfield dynamo scored four times during the month, a tally that was only matched by Norwich's Dean Ashton and Portsmouth's Tresor Lomana Lua-Lua. In the five games the newly crowned champions played in April, Lampard led his team in shots (12), passes (279) and tackles (23).

Wayne Rooney finishes second in the Opta rankings for April, mainly thanks to his high shooting frequency in front of goal. The former Everton forward hit 26 shots last month, with Blackburn's Jon Stead (20 attempts) his closest challenger.

Xabi Alonso's return to fitness sees the Spaniard take third place. The Liverpool number 14 played in three of The Reds' six games during April and was absent for both league defeats. Alonso averaged 85 passes per game, more than any other Premiership player

Manchester United's Wes Brown takes fourth place, thanks to some solid displays at the back for The Red Devils and the winning goal against Newcastle. That headed strike was Brown's first in The Premiership and the England international looked set to double that tally against Charlton before Chris Perry halted him with a professional foul.

Opta's top five for April is completed by West Brom's Zoltan Gera. The Hungary international scored against Everton and Tottenham as The Baggies picked up six points in their battle against relegation. Gera had more shots (15) than any other Albion player last month, but did not neglect his defensive duties, with the former Ferencvaros player also making more tackles (26) than any of his team-mates.
