Xavi admits that he spoke with Chelsea before signing a contract with Barca.Barcelona star Xavi has admitted that he spoke with Chelsea before deciding to extend his contract at Camp Nou, although denies receiving any kind of offer from The Blues.
Jose Mourinho's side were strongly linked with the midfielder in April, and were expected to flex their considerable financial muscle in a bid to lure Xavi away from the club he joined as an 11-year-old.
However the schemer delighted fans of Los Cules by putting pen-to-paper on a new lucrative deal in June, ending any hopes Chelsea had of displaying their transfer market might and landing the 25-year-old.
Xavi has now revealed that he did enter into dialogue with Mourinho, although not to the extent where an offer was tabled and not with the intensity described in some reports.
The two crossed paths in Catalunya whilst Mourinho worked as assistant to both Sir Bobby Robson and Louis van Gaal, and Xavi insisted that their discussions were a result of their friendship rather than any real desire to end his association with Barca.
"I knew nothing of an offer, just that there was contact between Ivan (Corretja, Xavi's agent) but nothing like what was built up in the press," Xavi told El Mundo Deportivo.
"I did speak several times with Mourinho but that was because I have a good relationship with him and we met in the Champions League as well as a game between the national side and England in Madrid.
"But of an offer, nothing."
