Eidur Gudjohnsen has backed Hernan Crespo to be a hit at Chelsea.Eidur Gudjohnsen has backed Hernan Crespo to be a belated hit at Chelsea, with the Argentine returning to Stamford Bridge after his failure to seal a move to Milan.
Crespo has signalled his desire to prove his worth to Chelsea - after Milan failed to agree a deal for him, despite a hugely successful loan stint last year.
The Argentina international did not shine in his first stint in England, but Gudjohnsen believes that the entire squad will support him as he looks to find his feet.
"We will try and make Hernan feel as welcome as possible. Anything we can do to help, not only him but all of the new players, will be done," said Gudjohnsen.
"It was a difficult situation for him. It was a different culture, different climate even.
"Everything is settled in his personal life and so his family can settle in and he can enjoy his football.
"His quality will shine through and, hopefully, we can help him do that this year.
"No one has ever doubted his ability but it's whether he can play with a free mind on the pitch and concentrate solely on his football.
"Hopefully, if he can stay injury free, play some games and score goals then he can be a successful addition to the squad."
Chelsea were beaten only once on their way to last season's title, but the Icelandic star believes that manager Jose Mourinho can go one better this campaign.
"When you look at the last two seasons, Arsenal didn't lose one game in 2003/04 and we only lost one last year," said Gudjohnsen.
"But that just shows the standard you have to keep up if you want to win the Premiership title.
"You cannot lose games and there's no chance of slacking off so we must go for an even better season.
"Newcastle are making good signings, Liverpool, too, and there will be the usual suspects up there - us, Arsenal and Manchester United, with two, maybe three, others.
"We could have afforded to lose maybe two or three more games last season but we set the standard so high and we don't want to lose games.
"Once we were in front we stayed there and the gap just became bigger and bigger.
"That's what we aim to do this year. As soon as we find that top spot, we don't want to let it go."
