The Blues boss will field some of his lesser lights for the FA Cup third round clash against Huddersfield Town at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea regulars John Terry and Frank Lampard are being given a rest, while Glen Johnson, Robert Huth, Wayne Bridge and Carlton Cole are all due to start.
That quartet have barely figured this season during Chelsea's unstoppable march to a second successive Premiership title.
And Mourinho admits that, if the players in question want to have a future at Stamford Bridge, they must perform against Huddersfield.
"The FA Cup is unpredictable and the best team doesn't always win," said Mourinho.
"I'm resting Frank Lampard and John Terry, but that's not a lack of responsibility. It's giving responsibility to others.
"Johnson, Huth, Bridge and Cole will start and if players cannot cope with the responsibility of beating Huddersfield, they are here for nothing.
"If they have ambitions to play regularly in The Premiership, they have to play very seriously against Huddersfield and win the game."
