Roeder: Three will arrive

Newcastle United manager Glenn Roeder believes they will have three new players.

Newcastle United manager Glenn Roeder believes the club will have three new faces signed before the end of August.

The Magpies start the new Premiership season without having acquired a new striker, as they have been seeking one for much of the close season.

The North East giants are keen to boost their attack following the retirement of Alan Shearer and the serious knee injury suffered by Michael Owen at the World Cup finals in Germany.

The Toon Army have since been linked with several top goalscorers - with suggestions they may revive their interest in Werder Bremen hit-man Miroslav Klose after losing out on Dirk Kuyt to Liverpool.

Internazionale striker Obafemi Martins is another striking target for Newcastle, despite a row in the week regarding the Nigerian's age, while Real Madrid's Thomas Gravesen and Chelsea's Wayne Bridge have also been the subject of a proposed move The Magpies.

"There's no panic whatsoever going into the game against Wigan, but that doesn't mean that we've shut up shop," Roeder said in the Daily Mirror.

"I'm very confident that there will be at least three new players here by the time the window closes.

"A striker is our priority and after another meeting with the chairman, I know he is fully supporting our efforts.

"If we do land our targets, we will be in a very healthy position indeed.

"You will see players who come here in these next two weeks who are proven in The Premiership. We prepared a year early for Alan (Shearer) retiring by signing Michael Owen.

"Give the club credit - they thought Michael would be fit for the next four or five years. But he's had horrendous luck, and so have we. There's no pressure to bring anybody in. Last year, we won plenty of games with this squad.

"But we want to add to it because we want to do better than we did last year. Our goal this year is to finish higher than seventh and to improve on the 58 points we achieved last season.

"That's my goal and that's the players' goal. More players of quality would definitely help us to do that."
