Gael Clichy is convinced he is the ideal candidate to replace Ashley Cole.
Arsenal defender Gael Clichy is convinced he is the ideal candidate to replace Ashley Cole as the club's first choice left back.
The talented French full back recently stepped-up his rehabilitation from a long-term foot injury and played the final nine minutes of Saturday's comfortable defeat of Watford.
Clichy managed just 11 appearances last term as injury again tempered his involvement but fit again now, he is eyeing regular first team football.
While Arsenal chief Arsene Wenger has elected to use both Justin Hoyte and William Gallas in the position vacated by Cole's switch across the capital to Chelsea, Clichy is a specialist in the role.
Clichy accepts competition is fierce for a starting spot but it is with dogged determination that he sets out to convince Wenger of his personal qualities.
"Ashley is a friend and I am really happy for him if he is happy at Chelsea," Clichy said.
"He is a great player and it is a shame for the club to lose a player like this.
"Of course, though, I have to be realistic and it is a big opportunity for me.
"Now I am fit and am waiting for the boss to give me a chance. I will not let him down.
"William Gallas can play on the left and Mathieu Flamini also last season played quite well. We have got Justin Hoyte too and Armand Traore.
"We have to work together and be as good as possible for the team - but of course I think the boss knows I am in a good position to play on the left, so I am just going to work hard and try my best to make this position my own."
