The Football Association has rejected John Obi Mikel's appeal against the red card he received against Manchester United.
Mikel was sent off by referee Mike Dean during Chelsea's 2-0 defeat at Old Trafford on Sunday for a challenge on Patrice Evra.
Chelsea confirmed immediately after the match that the club would appeal against the dismissal.
However, the FA's disciplinary commission met on Tuesday to discuss Mikel's appeal and have upheld Dean's original decision.
The Nigerian midfielder will now serve a three-match suspension, starting with Chelsea's Carling Cup third-round tie with Hull City on Wednesday.
Mikel will also sit out The Blues' next two Premier League games - at home to Fulham on Saturday and at Bolton Wanderers the following weekend.
