Chelsea had lost at Newcastle United and salvaged a controversial late draw at home to West Bromwich Albion in their two Premier League games prior to the international break.
However, Lampard scored twice at Upton Park, either side of Oscar's goal, to secure a 3-0 win which keeps Chelsea within four points of leaders Arsenal.
"It was very important for us as a team to get back on track," Lampard told Sky Sports following the victory.
"We've had a couple of results that we knew if we kept losing silly points it was going to put ourselves out of the race.
"It was massive there for us today and I'm very pleased to play a part of it.
"I think we've certainly got the capabilities, but the last couple of results have showed us exactly what we don't want to be. We don't want to be that inconsistent team that we've been in the last two or three years in the league.
"I think we still need to improve in little areas, but if we can find that consistency, with the quality we've got in our squad, we're determined to make a big challenge.
"That's all we can do week by week. We want to win it this year."
Lampard's goals ended a run of 10 Premier League appearances without scoring and the 35-year-old was happy to contribute against his old club.
He added of his goal drought: "I've had little patches in my career where that does happen, but I have to keep my head.
"I've been playing deeper and at times I've missed a couple of opportunities that I'd expect to score as well.
"It might not be as easy to get 20 goals a season like before, but if I can get important goals for the team now and again, and watch all the players develop in front of me, like Hazard, Oscar and Mata, they've got so much ability, that it's great to be part of the team with those players in it."
