Soccer Saturday panel discuss defender John Stones

The Soccer Saturday panel have mixed feelings over Everton's decision to prevent John Stones securing a transfer to Chelsea.

Phil Thompson says he admires the club's bullish stance, Paul Merson feels sorry for the lad Stones and suggests he has been badly advised handing in a transfer request, while Charlie Nicholas thinks the Toffees should cash in.

Everton boss Roberto Martinez has insisted to Chelsea: "You can't just click your fingers and get anything you want because you have Champions League funding."

And Thompson told Soccer Saturday: "For me, it would be massively embarrassing for the club to go back on it now," Thompson said.

"It would be a great move for such a young man, but it would be a fantastic statement of intent by them to keep their man."

Merson said: "I feel sorry for the lad. I think he was badly advised with the transfer request because, for the life of me, I can't see a 21 thinking 'I'll put in a transfer request', you just wouldn't.

"Someone has told him to do it and he's the one who's in trouble because the fans will be on his back if they start losing games."

Nicholas said: "He's desperately trying to get players in with two games to go and I think they need strengthening more than they need to keep John Stones.

"If they get £35m, who could they add to the group with that?"
