England boss Roy Hodgson said: "It's disappointing for Wayne not to be involved of course. He's not the type of person or player who likes to miss games, but unfortunately he received a knock against Arsenal.

"We've been waiting it to settle down and it has done, but we don't want to risk him tomorrow. He's got a lot of important Manchester United games ahead and I would be devestated if we put him out there and increased his problem.

"It will be nice for Gary to have the chance to captain team and the presentation will still be made to Wayne. He's been keen to stay with us and be part of post-match meetings, and of course he is looking forward to Bobby Charlton presenting him with his golden boot tomorrow night."

Liverpool forward Danny Ings sat out Thursday's training session at St George's Park with an ankle problem, while Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick was also unable to participate.
